Start Your Year-End Bookkeeping in October: Five Steps for a Calmer December
The fourth quarter is here. A little bookkeeping attention in October 2026 can make the final months of the year easier and give you better information for business decisions.
1. Close September before moving ahead
Reconcile bank and credit card accounts through September 30. Review outstanding deposits, missing receipts, and uncategorized transactions while the details are still fresh.
2. Review your year-to-date reports
Compare income and expenses with your budget and last year. Look for changes in margins, recurring costs, and customer payment patterns. Profit and cash in the bank tell different stories, so review both.
3. Follow up on unpaid invoices
Review your accounts receivable aging report, send friendly reminders, and clarify payment arrangements before the holiday season gets busy.
4. Organize payroll and contractor records
Check employee contact details and collect missing contractor information, including Forms W-9 where appropriate. Review payment records with your payroll provider or tax preparer to determine what year-end reporting applies.
5. Plan cash needs for the next three months
List upcoming payroll, vendor bills, seasonal purchases, and other commitments. Schedule a tax-planning conversation using current reports rather than waiting until December.
